SCHEELS and COFA Presents: The Kids’ FREE Ham Shoot – Saturday, March 14 – 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM

SCHEELS values the opportunity to connect youth with outdoor recreation activities and is excited to partner with COFA to host this Ham Shoot. Kids ages 6 to 17 are invited to participate in shooting BB guns at paper targets! Those 8 to 15 may participate in the competition to win a FREE Easter ham and more great prizes! Kids of all ages may participate in other fun events, like a scavenger hunt / wildlife track identification, photo opportunities, outdoor related activities, and more!

Kids who are signed up for the final time slot, 1:00 PM, must arrive at the registration table NO LATER than 1:00 PM in order to participate in the final competition shooting session. We recommend signing up for an earlier time slot to make sure your child has ample time to participate in the competition! There are other activities as noted on this page that kids can participate in while waiting for the ceremony. Make a day of it!

COFA believes in passing to the next generations our values, skills, and outdoor pastimes. A Ham Shoot (targets only, no live animals involved) is a great way to do all three at the same time.
 

Kids ages 8-15 will have an opportunity to use a B.B. gun on paper targets to win great prizes, including an Easter ham (must be present to win). The award ceremony will be presented at 2:00 PM. Other activities include a scavenger hunt, outdoor education experiences, photo opportunities and more!!

The history of the COFA Kids' Free Paper Target Shoots

While watching a movie based on the life story of Sergeant Alvin York, a World War 1 congressional Medal (CMH) honor winner, there was a part in the movie where Alvin was in a turkey shoot as a young man. The turkey shoot took place in the hills of Tennessee. Several COFA members have seen this movie, and we thought it looked like a great event for our kids. COFA's free Kids' Ham Shoot is for boys and girls from 8 to 15 years of age. We at COFA want an event that is fun for kids and a learning experience for them as well.

How it Works

The kids will shoot a designated amount of BB's at paper hog targets to see if they can win an Easter ham. The scorers will add up the total amount of hits near the bullseye to determine the winner. Boys and girls are put into age brackets (8-9, 10-11, 12-13, 14-15). Each age bracket has an opportunity to win an Easter Ham for 1st prize, Bratts for 2nd prize, and Bacon for 3rd prize. And all the kids will get other cool prizes! COFA provides BB guns so everyone has a fair chance at shooting. We don't allow personal BB guns...just COFA's!

Why We Do It

One of the purposes of the Kids' Ham Shoot is to get them involved in the outdoors and away from sitting on the couch playing with their electronics. Our kids today, for the most part, have no clue how much fun it can be doing fun things in the outdoors. That's what COFA does so well, it helps families and individuals connect with each other while doing activities like camping, fishing, off-roading, hunting, hiking, biking, etc. Through COFA's events like the Kids' Ham Shoot, fathers and sons reconnect and build their relationships with each other. Same with mothers and daughters...they reconnect as well. COFA's ministry is to get families to develop healthy bonds through outdoor-related events.
