Word of the Day, February 21, 2018

“ Onward then, ye people, join our happy throng, Blend with ours your voices in the triumph song. Glory, laud, and honor unto Christ the King, This through countless ages men and angels sing.”

2 John 1:9

9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.

John's audience was to the " the elect lady " and her children, most likely the local church. The church had developed a strong relationship with John and John was warning them of the false teachers who were becoming more prevalent in the area.

False teachers were a dangerous problem then and still even today. John's warning against showing hospitality to false teachers may sound harsh and unloving to many today. Yet these people were teaching heresies that could have seriously harm many others for eternity.

Let's talk about that. Today we have this with so many false or man-made religions. Here are a few examples from some mainstream religions today. The church is more important that a personal relationship with Christ, you must be baptized to have eternal life, you get to heaven by being a good person and your works, there is no heaven or hell, wrong! By this kind of false teachings, souls will be lost. The Word of GOD is what we are to follow and not man.

John talks about following Divine Truth in its relation to believers, it unites them in fellowship, it eternally dwells in us, it is in connection with love, and to love obedience to the pathway in which they walk. He also speaks about the worldly errors, the deceitful teachers and advocates of their own religion, they denied the incarnations of Christ, we must be guarded against this and their departing from the teachings of Christ and to not fellowship among these deceivers.

Not much has changed in the last 2000 + years. We still have advocates of unorthodox beliefs and they still exist to attempted to confuse and deceive the people of GOD. This short letter from John should serve as a wake up call for all of us to be alert, to be careful and to be solidly grounded in the Word of GOD. Are we prepared to recognize false doctrines? I'll ask you this question this morning. How do you prepare for a test? We study right? We need to be reading and studying the Word of GOD, right? Are you prepared to know the difference between false teachings and the Word of GOD? It will make a difference in your eternity.

“ One the strain that lips of thousands lift as from the heart of one; One the conflict, one the peril. One the march in God begun. One the gladness of rejoicing on the far eternal shore, where the one almighty Father Reigns in love forevermore.”
