I have been shooting coyotes with my 7mm Mag when elk hunting, any good idea's on a specific coyote rifle, what do you suggest?
I use a Savage .223 with a 1:9 twist. The twist rate allows me to use a heavier bullet as compared to a 1:10 twist. I reload and use a 70 gr Barns Triple Shock.
If I'm hunting in higher altitude's, I'll go to a .243 caliber.

Lot of good varmint calibers out there.

When I'm yote huntin, I like a 22-250. When I'm speed-goat, deer and elk hunting and I see a unfortunate song dog, I use my .300 Win. Mag. That is if I'm in a situation where I won't spook off my main quarry.

Mike when you started this thread you mention that you used a 7mm Mag. Can you get the same rifle in a 22-250 or a 223. Practice on yotes the feel would be close but the recoil is a big difference.

varmint round

a .223 or 22-250 is hard to beat...I had a Ruger77 in 22-250 with a bull barrel that was incredible...but a bit to pack around...the xp-100 in 223 was for sure a fun varmint unit...1/2" groups at 100 yds...had a reinhart-fajen thumbhole stock on it...compact and very avccurate...but I think the loudest gun I ever owned...people thought I was shooting a 300 win mag when it went off... used win ball powder(I think 248 0r 260) and nosler 52 gr bullets...probably the most fun weapon I ever owned...had a low pro leopold on it...

Well, another vote for the Savage! I have a Savage Model 12 Low Profile in 22-250 and it is an awesome rifle!

I gave about $700.00 for mine. No, I haven't had a chance to varmint hunt with it yet because I just recently received it (a Christmas present from my wife  ). I have done some range shooting with it, and the results have been dime size 4 and 5 shot groups @ 100 yards. I plan to take this rifle coyote hunting SOON!

I also have a Savage Model 10 in .243 which I have hunted with, the coyote pictured in my AVATAR was taken with this rifle. The accuracy from the Model 10 is the same as the model 12, I have been extremely impressed with the accuracy of both of these Savage riles. The .243 drops coyotes with authority but, is not very fur friendly. I am hoping the 22-250 will be a little easier on furs than the .243.

It would be very hard for me to buy a rifle from any other gun manufacturer after using the Savage.
